This Saturday Lund’s streets will explode in a celebration of world culture, thanks to the start of the yearly Kulturnatten, or Culture Night. Lundagård checked the program to find out how an international student best spend their day at this cultural celebration.
TOUR
At the Konsthallen, located at Mårtenstorget 3, go on a guided art tour by foot, bicycle or bus. These tours will take you around Lund to see all the art Kulturnatten has to offer. Walking tours leave at 10:00 and 16:00, while the bicycle tours leave at 14:00 and 17:00. The bus tour leaves at 15:00 and requires a ticket, so be sure to download one early by visiting the Konsthallen anytime after 10:00.
If you have time to kill before your tour, the Konsthallen has quite a bit of art itself and will also be featuring a sculpture workshop from 10:00 to 18:00.
DANCE
Starting at 14.30 at the Lundagård Dance Floor, there will be non-stop dancing until 24:00. Some of the highlights from the dance program include, Swedish Bugg (a swedish style of swing dancing) starting at 15:30, Capoeira at 17:25, Hip-hop at 18:35 and Swedish Folk Dance at 20:10.
MUSIC
If choral music interests you, the Domkyrkan has several different performances throughout the evening. Lunds very own Korinterna girls choir performs at 18:20, and Korallerna womens choir performs at both 19:00 and 20:00. For a mixed ensemble, visit Drottens Kyrkoruin at Kattesund 6 at 20:00. Here a combination of Vocal, Recorder and Harp music from ca. 900-1300 is featured.
One of the big events headlining the day of festivities is Dirty Loops performance at the Stortorget. Dirty Loops, a Stockholm based band, started their career with a viral cover of Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance”, which launched them into the cultural limelight. Since then they’ve progressed away from simple covers and have grown into a fully realized band, with a mixture of jazz, funk and fusion influences. Their performance on Saturday promises to be filled with energy, while also being accessible to any non-Swedish speakers in the crowd. The show begins at 18:30 at the Stortorget Stage.
Another one of the larger performances during Saturdays event is Sallyswag. Also playing at the Stortorget stage, Sallyswag is a unique blend of Swedish, Bulgarian, Cuban, Somalian and Lebanese music in the form of a nine member ensemble. They’ll be blasting out tunes to dance to from 23:00 to 23:45.
PHYSICS AND LASER SHOW
Round out your night with a extraordinary night show, by heading to the Department of Physics, located at Sölvegatan 14 C. Here, the department is putting on a Physics and Laser show for public enjoyment. While shows for children go on throughout the day, at night the shows are only available for adults. These shows begin at 20:00, 22:00, and 24:00, include smoke, fire and lasers, and last about an hour. Free tickets are available starting one hour before each show.
