Any other Saturday morning at 8:45 AM, Lund would be a ghost town while students slept in and recovered from Friday night. This Saturday, however, was not ordinary.
This week, students trekked to Stadsparken in droves, with blankets, snacks, and Systembolaget bags in hand, to celebrate Valborg, the coming of spring, and the great weather.
Lundagård interviewed international students Alex Campbell (Canada), Polly Dallas (US), Jonfen Son (Germany) and Stella Wei (New Zealand) waiting outside Mejeriet for the rest of their group to arrive, about their thoughts and expectations for Valborg.
When did you first hear about Valborg?
Alex: Probably two to three weeks ago from my Swedish floormates – they said it was the best thing ever – the greatest party to happen in Lund all year.
Polly: I can’t remember – I think I probably heard about it back in August.
Jonfen: I heard about it on Facebook.
Do you have any holidays like Valborg at home?
Alex: The closest thing in Canada is May Long Weekend – I dunno its significance, but you sit around, barbeque, and drink.
Polly: We have Picnic Day at my school [UC Davis] where there are exhibitions all day all over campus, people drink shitty beers, and cause a ruckus.
Jonfen: We have a spring event, Freinacht, where kids go out at night and throw eggs and stuff… but this is better.
So, what are your expectations for today?
Polly: I don’t really have any expectations, just to have fun with good music and good friends.
Alex: I’m gonna get drunk in the park all day long!
Jonfen: That, and I want a tan.
Stella: My goal is to get Alex drunk.
How about plans for tonight (after St
adsparken)?
Polly: Smålands tonight!!
Stella: Parties…?
Alex: I will see where Valborg takes me.
