The professor is suspected of gross breach of trust and unlawful use of public funds or property.“It’s been a very rough time, but we’ve had a lot of help from the other parts of the university”, says the head of the department in question.

The professor was remanded on Tuesday night, according to SVT Sydnytt.

The prosecutor Pernilla Trimmel, the defence attourney Fredrik Bülow and the university Vice-Chancellor Per Eriksson are all very reticent about the matter.

The preliminary enquiry was opened in the middle of May. The misdeeds should have started in 2010. On Tuesday, Pernilla Trimmel considered the evidence enough to issue an arrest warrant.

”I considered arresting him necessary since there are reasons to believe that he can obstruct the investigation as long as he is at large”, says Pernilla Trimmel to Sydnytt.

The matter was handed over to the police on May 3.

“We treated the matter a couple of weeks ago together with the union, the head of the department and representatives from the staff department. As superior manager I took part in the decision to hand over the matter to the police”, says Vice-Chancellor Per Eriksson.

The matter has been considered in the Staff Disciplinary Board at the university before it was brought up by a prosecutor. The head of the department in question expresses deep regret about what has happened.

“It’s been a very rough time, but we’ve had great help from the other parts of the university. I can’t say anything more than the fact that the matter deals with economic irregularities.

What have you told the staff today (tuesday)?

”We have informed about the things I’m telling you, to avoid speculation and false rumours being spread.”

Will the staff and students be affected by this?

”No, not really, I couldn’t say that. But it’s always unfortunate when someone in the staff, a colleague or someone you know, is involved in something like this.”

The professor was released from custody o thursday, as he from the prosecutors point of view wouldn’t obstruct the investigation further.
