After eating one semla last Tuesday, Paula Dubbink feels like she’s had enough cream for the entire year. Time for a good work-out! The Culture column of this week gives an overview of some sporty events in Lund.

Last Tuesday, I made another step towards full integration into Swedish society: I ate a semla. And although I usually love sugar, fat and generally everything that is bad for your health, I should admit that I didn’t really enjoy this part of Swedish culture.

After finishing, I mainly felt nauseous and a little guilty for eating such an insane amount of cream…

Do you also slightly regret your excessive eating on Semla Day? Or do you just think that it’s time to finally start with your ambitious New Year resolution to ‘do more sports’? This week’s Culture Column has a focus on active events. Get your lazy body off the couch and put on those training shoes!

If you have an ESN card – or wouldn’t mind getting one -, you can lose some pounds by joining ESN’s running and sauna event. On Monday, a group will go running at 19.50 from Kårhuset, to return fifty minutes later for a hot Swedish sauna. Afterwards, you will feel fresh, active and very satisfied that you went running

No costs involved, except for the membership; more information on what exactly to bring is found in the link. If you need more time to mentally prepare for such exhaustion: there’s another option exactly a week later.

Want to be one of the first to try out Lund’s newest form of (wet) amusement? Since last weekend, Lund is the proud host of a new and luxurious swimming pool! In the Högevall swimming pool, the ‘adventure bath’ offers exciting water slides and a wild water track.

Of course, you can also just make some swimming meters in a regular 25-metre pool, or sit in the whirlpool. Opening times: weekdays 11-20, weekends 9-18. The adventure pool costs 110 SEK for adults, but if you only go the regular pool, you’ll pay less. Address: Högevallsgatan 1.

Do you prefer to sport for free? Then try gympa, a Swedish form of work-out that looks a lot like aerobics. On Tuesdays from 10-11 and on Wednesday from 17-18, there are free classes/work-outs in the Folketsparken. (Yeah, you have to be a die-hard with this weather, but with good clothing it should work!) The information says that ‘it’s okay to bring a baby car along’, so some of your fellow sport(wo)men might be Swedish mums or dads. But what would be a better way to integrate? Don’t forget to bring something to sit on. See here for more information, unfortunately only in Swedish.

Being sporty and active is very nice, but of course you also need some rest this week. Why not find a nice chair in AF Borgen on Wednesday night? If you arrive around 7 PM, you’ll just be in time for the lecture of Elena Namli, a professor in ethics at Uppsala University.

She will lecture on the relation between Islamic Sharia Law and human rights. That promises food for thought and discussion! The lecture is free for members of the Association of Foreign Affairs, 20 SEK for members of AF and 30 SEK for all others.

Have an active week!
