Norrland’s – a different nation

Sick of that old stuffy nation where you have to be a member to take part in activities? Meet the newest addition in Lund, a nation that wants to update the idea of what a nation is, and breathe new life into a long since sleeping nation – Norrland’s.

Why did you want to start a nation?

“We want to find a new way of running a nation. Several of us have been active in various societies earlier and we’ve been talking about it for a long time. We wanted to do something unique, broaden views and think differently around what a nation really is,” says Arwid, and continues: “our starting-point is that everything should keep developing. For example, we won’t have a set venue for the nation, we don’t want to be tied to any place in particular. Instead we want to focus on arranging various events. We’ve got plans for a club and are currently searching for a locale for it. Ideally we would like to have it in a large warehouse or something like that.

Another thing that is different about Norrland’s nation is that students won’t be able to apply for a membership.

“It shouldn’t be about money, and there should be as few restrictions as possible”, says Arwid.

Are you planning on applying to become a proper nation?

“We’ve never had it as a goal and it is difficult to become a proper nation. There is a chance that we might, but then we would have to conform to certain rules, like having a set venue. So far we are an association, but we’ll see how things develop.

Are you from Norrland?

“Some of us have connections to Norrland, but that’s not what the name reflects, it’s more because there has been a Norrland’s Nation in the past.”

Would you say the nation is as laid back as a person from Norrland?

“Haha, yes, part of the idea is bringing some of the culture of Norrland to Lund and trying to create a different mood.”
