Forty thousand international students studied in Sweden in 2009. Barely 500 of them stayed after exams. A state committee wants to change that.

The committee, which will be presented shortly, is going to make several suggestions for how the Swedish migration regulations can be changed.

The primary motive for making it easier for foreign students to stay after exams is to make their entrance into the Swedish labor market easier.

Stay half a year

A likely reason for not staying is that the temporary residence permit expires shortly after exams, according to committee chairman Mikaela Valtersson (MP).

“We suggest that people be able to stay half a year in order to be able to establish themselves in the Swedish labor market,” she said to Ekot on Sveriges Radio.

The investigation has been underway since 2009 and consists of members from all parliament parties except the Sweden Democrats.
