I know I have written about pancakes before. Now I want to write about what they mean to us.
Remember the Halloween pancakes when they came as a plan B? Now, we played the same at Easter… with the difference that at Halloween we had a plan A, the pumpkin soup, we just didn’t have the ingredients for cooking it. At Easter we were too lazy even to make a plan. “What should we eat, what should we cook?” “Hmmm… pancakes?” And that was all. All the Easter traditions of 3-4-5 different nationalities with all their special Easter meals forgotten. What a waste!
It was a nice dinner, though. We all were a little bit sad, we all missed our families. In this case it’s a great idea to eat something with a lot of sugar in it. Oh yeah, this time we had only sweet pancakes. With jam, with cocoa powder, with nutella, with ice cream. Fold it or roll it. The winning combination is: nutella & banana & vanilla ice cream!
At the same time, I realized that quite many of us have become professional pancake-makers. Not only can they find the right amount of flour, eggs and milk, but they are getting better and better in the acrobatic show when throwing the pancake to turn. Lund University should give a certificate for it! Minor in Pancake in Practice. Or Pancake Development Studies.
Meanwhile a lot of things have started to change around us. Although we are planning to stay for a longer time, we have already started to feel: this is the beginning of the end. Summer holiday is coming, students will go away, new ones arriving. We have to argue with the landlord about summer prices. We have to say goodbye and say hello again.
In these changing times only one thing seems to remain stable: pancakes. One of us has moved out. Next week she came back for a dinner. What did we have? Pancakes. For this week we planned a barbecue. Instead of it what will we have finally? Pancakes!
