The biology student council wanted to develop students’ photography skills, and organized a photo exhibition and competition during the last few weeks. Lundagård got to chat with the proud silver medalist Benjamin Forsmark.

You take photos of nature, what does that particular moment that the picture saves mean to you?

“The final picture when everything for a fraction of a second has fallen into place in front of the camera is very rewarding. Often after hours waiting in a blind, freezing cold or perforated by mosquitos in a swamp.”

Someone said that personal satisfaction borne from the picture is a reward in itselfDo you agree?

“In my own photography, the motive of the picture is the subject of my interest and the reason why I spend much time in the field. I use the camera a lot as a documentary tool, and good pictures are often nothing but bonuses from a field journey.”

How would you describe the feeling that accompanies a successful  picture?

“Successful pics are often the result of chance and pure luck. We are attracted to extremes. Anyone with slight talent and a camera can capture spectacular situations, simply by being at the right place at the right time. These pictures seldom reach the same public interest, but are on the other hand much more stimulating to produce.”

Advice for future colleagues?

“Nature is wild. Random coincidences have to be predicted or manipulated to your favor. A good raincoat and big thermos are essential while enduring the wait.”

What are your future photo-connected ambitions?

“To visualize interesting biological phenomena through photography.”
