Do you want to catch up on the newsflow? Swedish news is sometimes hard to come by. Lundagard’s international edition gives you a short summary of local, regional and national news every week.

Snow has finally arrived, but is sadly not here to stay. Despite an hour and a half of solid snowfall yesterday evening, temperatures in coming days will be too high to preserve Lund’s new white coat.

Lund University might be getting back on track in attracting foreign Master’s students after having its international population decimated in the fall. 55 percent more applications than last year listed Lund as a first choice, and applications from non-EU countries are up as much as 25 percent, according to University officials.

Malmö residents are fed up with the deadly violence which has terrorized their city in recent weeks. Malmö has lost five lives within just six weeks, and these tragedies have spurred some residents to take action. Tony and Linda Bengtsson, parents of four young children, wish to gather residents to publicly demonstrate their collective opposition to the violence, which they believe to be linked to drug-dealing activity within Malmö.

More Scanian fathers want to be sure their baby is theirs. The number of paternity tests requested has increased by 23 percent in the last three years. With many babies born to people who are unmarried or in “non-traditional” arrangements, the desire to be sure is understandable.

The best time to see Sweden’s animals is now at Skånes Djurpark, one of the few zoos open during winter in Sweden. Most people visit during the summer, which is a mistake, says Michael Jörgensen, the zoo’s curator. Many important attractions, such as the elk, reindeer, and wildcats have their finest fur during the winter, and they are more active now than in the summer when it is too warm. Furthermore, fewer visitors in the winter makes getting good a view of the animals easier.
