Markku Rummukainen is a researcher at Lund University, and one of the authors behind IPCC:s latest report on the climate and the report Klimatsäkrat Skåne. He has spotted a need for several different solutions to stop global warming.
1.Technology development. We need to get rid of the fossil fuels. Globally, it generally concerns coal based electricity generation, the transport sector, and industries, but also habitation. The use of soil (including the agrarian sector) also contributes to the emissions. In Sweden, the transport sector is responsible for a large part of the emissions, and so is production. Our consumption related emissions have even gotten higher.
2.Transformative changes. We need to rethink how we construct our societies, for example cities and mobility. Do we need to move as much in the future, or can we have dwelling, school and work in the same place?
3. Recycling instead of consumption. Sustainable consumption is incredibly important in the context. How our view on what we eat, how we live, travel and shop changes over time means matters a lot.
4. Change of norms. It is not about making an individual responsible, or about prohibitions, but rather about offering new solutions. They should not make life worse, but rather better.
5. Fighting poverty and smaller divides. The questions regarding society, the climate and nature are all interconnected and work together, for better or worse. To move on we need to work with them synchronously. Solutions on one issue often contribute to solutions on other issues.
