The Biljetten scholarship has been awarded since 2014. It comes in the form of a trip to a major city, and is awarded to a co-worker at Lundagård who has shown playfulness, courage and brilliancy. This year’s winner will go to Budapest.

Marko T Wramén was editor at Lundagård in 1994-1995 and is nowadays a freelance journalist with the whole world as his office. In order to highlight a journalist at his former workplace who has shown playfulness, courage and brilliancy, he created a scholarship in 2014 which is now granted for the third time.

”Curiousity is the keyword”

It takes a lot to become a journalist, and more than that to become a great journalist – which is necessary to be seen in a changing media scene.

”Curiousity and stubborness are keywords. There is a risk that young people who want to work in media are too careful and only motivated by demand. Through rewarding playfulness and courage, I want to encourage choosing your own way”, Mark T Wramén says.

Someone who did exactly this is Daniel Kindstand. He is a freelance journalist,  currently covering the EU-conference with the Prime Minister of Turkey. In 2014, Virve Ivarsson was granted the scholarship, but Daniel is last year’s Biljetten winner and got a chance to go to Warsaw.

”For me, the scholarship was a confirmation that I was doing something good”, he says, explaining what the prize signals:

”You shouldn’t be afraid of trying out your ideas. Even if you don’t really know how or what to do, just keep going. Try to ask experienced journalists for advice”, Daniel Kindstrand says.

Trying out how to work journalistically can be a good and practical experience to have before going for the profession. This is something that Lundagård has offered both these journalists.

”It was there that I discovered that you can work outside of the big offices, that you can go your own way, do your own things. It is also an excellent way to experiment with form and expression”, Marko T Wramén says.

”I learnt a lot at Lundagård, which was my first step into the profession. Finding some sort of practical experience before starting your work is a good way to find out if the journalist way of working suits you. To me, the freedom, variation and diversity of expression is what is so alluring”, Daniel Kindstrand says.

Budapest of high political interest

The scholarship, which has been awarded twice before, has taken the holders to Berlin and Warsaw. This year, the destination is Budapest for several reasons.

”Budapest is a fascinating city in so many ways. Historically, it is one of two hearts in the Hapsburgian realm, a realm with a heritage that influences realpolitik to this day. The city is a frontline in the new era of migration. In addition, the city is highly interesting from a perspective of daily politics considering the quick and frightening turn towards extreme politics”, Marko T Wramén explains.

This is how you apply for Biljetten:

  • Requirements: You are a co-worker at Lundagård who has done work for the newspaper in the last year.
  • Do: Write a personal letter where you motivate how your work is playful, courageous and brilliant. Attach examples of your work and describe situations where this shows.
  • Application: Send your application to lundagard@lundagard.se no later than Sunday 17 April.
