The members have had their say. Småland’s Nation is applying for membership in Kuratorskollegiet and Studentlund.

About three weeks ago, the board at Småland’s Nation proposed that the nation would join Kuratorskollegiet and Studentlund. Last Monday, an overwhelming majority of the members of Småland’s Nation voted to pass the motion.

“We had a calm discussion at the nation meeting concerning the arguments in the motion. We changed a technicality in the motion and clarified that 100 SEK from the membership fee will go towards the Academic Society as soon as we get our mandates there”, says Edvin Lindström, nation representative at Småland’s Nation.

“Now, we will have talks with AF and Kuratorskollegiet, and they will hopefully be able to reach a decision before the end of spring term. Then, there needs to be an additional decision next autumn for us to get our mandates”, Edvin Lindström says.
There has been much critique directed at you not having been given a mandate from your members to apply for membership. Any comments?
“It has nothing to do with mandates. Talking to other nations or student organisations doesn’t require any mandates from our members. We have, after all, not reached any decision on our own”, says Edvin Lindström.
Will you be elected to Kuratorskollegiet?
“I can only speculate to that. We haven’t met with all the nations yet, but it feels as if we could have some good discussions with them”, he says.

Internal discussions
The issue will now be brought up by the twelve nations that constitute Kuratorskollegiet.

“We will now have serious discussions regarding what we will require from a new member, and it’s difficult to say where those discussions will land”, says Carl Mauritz Artéus, chairperson of Kuratorskollegiet.

“We will have a meeting on Monday, and if I’m allowed to speculate, I believe that we will elect a workgroup to look into this”, he says.

Might require nation meetings
There is a requirement of two thirds of the votes from the other curators to be elected into Kuratorskollegiet. But according to Carl Mauritz Artéus, there is probably need for a unanimous decision for Småland’s Nation to be able to join Studentlund as well.

“This is, first and foremost, a decision for the member nations and not a central issue for Kuratorskollegiet. There might be need for a nation meeting at some of the nations to decide how to move forward, so it’s difficult to say when we can reach a verdict”, Carl Mauritz Artéus says.
