500 Celebrating Research Launch
The daily Sydsvenskan reports that 500 European researchers visited Lund to mark the ESS inauguration last Thursday. ESS draws parallels to an enormous microscope which uses neutrons instead of light to study matter. The funding of the controversial research center is not entirely clear. Sweden, Denmark, and Norway account for 50% of the costs. However, there is still a 2.5% gap of the 17 billion SEK to be filled in the budget plan.
Used Car Con Artist Operating in Lund
Sydsvenskan reports a con artist specialized in car scams is operating in Lund. The 31-year old suspect purchases used cars through ads online, claiming he will pay for the car the following day and that he needs access the car urgently. Among the victims are a 62-year old man and a 53-year old woman. Sydsvenskan also reports that eight reports have been filed against the suspect.
Major Repair Work after Cloudbursts Delayed
The daily Skånska Dagbladet says that a total of 20% of all municipal buildings in Malmö needs major reparation after the heavy rains during the month of August. Head of Business Unit at Stadsfastigheter, Benny Thell, says everything will not be restored until the summer of 2015. The rain also damaged the interior of 10 buses in Malmö.
Stowaways Threaten Security Guard with Knife.
According to Skånska Dagbladet, three adolescent stowaways were involved in a ticket brawl on a bus in Malmö. As the ticket inspectors requested the three passengers to present their tickets, a violent altercation erupted, and one of the stowaways pulled out his knife and threatened one of the inspectors. The three passengers quickly escaped the bus, but two of them were arrested shortly after the incident.
Liberal Party Refrain from Social Democrat-Green Party Collaboration in Lund
According to Skånska Dagbladet, a Liberal Party press release says the Liberal Party has been negotiating with various parties about a potential collaboration system in Lund. However, the party has decided to take an opposing stance. Liberal Party member, Philip Sandberg, says the party will not be part of an organized collaboration with the Social Democrats and the Green Party, due to the gap between them in the political spectrum.
