300 SEK less each month, at the same time as the loan portion is increased by 1000 SEK each study month. This is proposed by the Swedish government’s 2014 Budget Bill.
The government’s 2014 Budget Bill suggests a study allowance increase. The subsidy portion will be decreased by 300 SEK and the loan portion will be increased by 700 SEK each study month. The government proposition seeks to reduce costs by approximately 0.8 billion SEK annually.
According to Swedish Minister for Finance, Anders Borg, the study allowance increase results in better opportunities for students to focus on their studies.
“The students have been given a considerable tax-free allowance increase. Study loans of 10,000 SEK per month provide quite advantageous opportunities to manage the financial situation,” says Anders Borg to the daily paper, Svenska Dagbladet.
No debt write-off
Today, the study loan debt is eliminated when you turn 68 years old. The very same government Budget Bill suggests that the student loans being claimed from 2015, will never be written off at the age of 68. An annual 0.35 billion SEK is what the government is hoping to save by taking this measure.
