While more and more students take trains and planes back to their family homes – either to return in August or for good – a few stay behind to defend Lund against the masses of tourists that will flood the city during summer. If you’re reading this and you’re one of those staying here for whatever reason – know that Paula Dubbink envies you.

Leaving Lund in ten days fills me with a mixture of cheerfulness and dread. Yes, I am happy to go home, get some well-cooked meals by mum and dad, reunite with good friends and finally understand whatever is being said on the radio. But as the weather of the last month gives high hopes for a good summer and the website of Lund’s Tourist Office is stuffed with fun activities, I regret not being part of any of them.

So, please enjoy Lund’s summer as much as possible and tell me in August about whatever I missed!

Let’s start with a list of some festivals – any serious town organizes one this summer. Veberöd heads off with its Mossagårdsfestival from June 14th to 16th. The website promises dance and theater performances, art, movies, games and more. From July 25th to 27th, Helsingborg takes over – only a short train ride away. Mid-August brings the Malmöfestivalen – program not yet defined, but keep checking the website. At the end of August, it’s finally Lund’s turn with the Humour Festival, which will include international comedians.

Lund’s Municipality organizes many activities under the header ‘Sommarlund’. They kick off with a big barbecue on Stortorget on June 13th – either bring your own food or buy some there – combined with acrobatics, dance and more, ending in a funk party!

Apart from this, Sommarlund organizes too many activities to list here – the best might be to check their website and find out what interests you: movies, theater, concerts or something else?

Okay, one activity that should just be mentioned are the dance nights at the Dance Floor in the City Park. Every day of the week a different dance style will be taught for half an hour, after which you can try out your skills. Quite some of the nights, there will be live music.

Every day except for Saturday from June 16th to August 9th in the Stadsparken, starting 7 PM.

Fed up with the crowdedness of the city? Of course, you can also leave the city behind and discover Scania’s countryside. If you get a Jojo Summer Card, you will be able to travel all through Skåne from June 15th to August 15th for less than 600 SEK. In case you are up for a fresh dip, you can discover very quiet swimming places between Borrby and Sandhammaren in the south of Österlen. At the other side of the province, north of Helsingborg, you can find a rocky beach called Hovs Hallar (Plan your travels here). Too far away? The bus to Lomma is always a convenient option and this small town offers even more than only the beach.

Finally: were you annoyed by the Swedish links that were included in this piece? A last tip in case you’re still bored this summer – improve your Swedish! The City Library still has free membership and lots of easy books…

Have a great summer and see you in September!
