Valborg, Lund’s greatest event, is coming soon. But the week before that still has something to offer before everyone heads to the city park, thinks Vasco Costa.

With reportedly more than 30 000 people last year in the city park, Valborg just changed the whole life in Lund for one day. This traditional event that celebrates the end of the winter is also an important occasion in the student life in Lund. But while the expectation increases, there are other things you can do as well:

What is Swedish? Valborg, for example. But not only. On Wednesday, the workshop “What is Swedish?” wants to encourage both Swedish and international students to discuss the cultural norms of Sweden, in an “open and respectful environment”. This event starts at 17:00 and lasts for two hours.

With an Oscar nomination for “best foreign movie”, the Chilean production “No” from 2012 can be good for getting away from everyday life. The action happens in 1988, when a manager in an advertising agency plans a campaign to defeat Pinochet in the public referendum. This week, “No” will be projected at Kino, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. And even if the movie is in Spanish, there are English subtitles.

Already in the weekend, you can fill your stomach after a night of party. On Saturday, Mejeriet offers a brunch accompanied with jazz-inspired live music by Mariline Maro, an African-descendent musician from Paris, who combines different music styles in her works. The performance starts at 14:00, but the brunch starts at 12:30 and the price is 129kr. At the end, you can go for a walk and check the park before Valborg, as it is located just next to Mejeriet.

If you are into classical music and want to experience a nice and dramatic concert before the DJ’s at Stadsparken on Tuesday, there is a double Requiem concert at the All Saints’ Church (Allhelgonakyrkan), on Sunday, at 17:00. One of the Requiem is the world-famous piece by Mozart, while the other version has been composed by the Swedish composer and orchestra conductor Johan-Magnus Sjöberg, who will be directing the concert himself. Tickets will be sold one hour before the concert starts and cost 100kr or 80kr for those who are under 21.

Enjoy and get ready for Valborg!

(Another thing to do this week is to go to Systembolaget before supply of booze is over – and don’t buy glass bottles! They are not allowed at Stadsparken.)
