April does whatever it wants. At least, if according to the Dutch saying ‘april doet wat ‘ie wil’. A good incentive to do exactly the same, according to Dutch culture columnist Paula Dubbink.
My apologies – I should not allow myself to start whining about the Swedish weather for the third time in a row, but let’s agree that April indeed sometimes ‘doet wat ie wil’, as one will hear say often this month in my home country. One moment you are enjoying the sun, the next moment hail and rain surround you. This undoubtedly can be blamed on April’s adolescent temper. When his older sister May arrives, I’m sure these issues will be settled.
But maybe we should instead follow April’s example and do ‘whatever we want to do’? No objections about deadlines coming up – in two months the semester will be over and we will regret not having done more things next to studying.
On Friday, you can enjoy a concert hosted by students from Malmö’s Music Academy. From 12.15 to 13.00, students playing the bassoon will perform. If you never have seen or heard a bassoon, this will be an excellent opportunity! The concert will take place in Palaestra et Odeum (Sandgatan 2) and is free of charge. A nice lunch break in between your studies, maybe?
More free music coming to Lund! In commemoration of the British composer Benjamin Britten, who died one hundred years ago, a piece of him for female choir and harp will be performed. Once again, if you have never heard a piece of Benjamin Britten, this will be an excellent opportunity… Place to be is Skissernas Museum, Finngatan 2, time and date to be is Thursday April 18th, 7 PM.
On Thursday as well, the Academic Society organizes their semesterly AF-games. The concept? Uniting teams of people that are involved in different student organizations (nations, unions, spex etcetera) and make them figure out who is the best in an exciting competition; this semester’s theme being ‘sports you have never tested’. The teams will, amongst others, compete in goalball and archery. The games start at 10 AM and take, with a break until 4.30. Who will beat last semester’s champions, Lunds Student Theater?
Signing up might by this time no longer be possible, but maybe you can still join an existing team. Otherwise, just being the audience might already be worthwhile. After all, who wouldn’t want to witness an exciting game of human table soccer?
If you’re up for something more serious, you might want to visit the Days of the Faculty of Humanities and Theology. On Friday and Saturday, they organize an extensive program around the theme ‘Close Relations’ with many interesting lectures. Unfortunately, most of the program will be held in Swedish, but there is still quite some choice for the internationals: from Kierkegaard on sexuality to the role of literature on love.
The brochure about the days is – well, surprise – in Swedish too, but I’m sure you can figure out the times of the English lectures. The location is SOL, Helgonabacken 12.
A bit too serious for you? Then find the middle way and join on Saturday or Sunday for a Graphic Facilitation workshop. Graphic Facilitation is about drawing simple pictures to structure your ideas. If you are a creative person that wants to learn how to communicate ideas in an original and effective way to colleagues, fellow students or customers in a (future) job, this might be a very interesting workshop!
Signing up should be done before the 15th, i.e. tomorrow at the latest! The costs are 150 SEK on Saturday (beginners) and 250 SEK on Sunday (advanced). Fike included…
Not interested in any of those? Buy an ice cream at Glasskulturen (Stortorget 8, they finally re-opened!) and enjoy the sun, if it is there.
Be like April, en ‘doe wat je wil’.
