The Engineering Student Union will now remove songs that can be regarded as offensive – something they promised to do ten years ago.

Rasmus Kjellén, chairman of the Engineering Student Union, Teknologkåren, says that the critic against “I Met a Whore in the Park” in the F-section’s song book is justified.

“I had a shock the first time a saw that the song was in there, it should’ve been discovered earlier. It’s only right to react against this and that type of content is something that we don’t support. “

He says that the F-section had already planned to revise their song book from a perspective that is critical towards standards before the autumn semester and that “I Met a Whore in the Park” will be removed.

“The F-section also say that they have urged for it not to be sung”, he says.

Rasmus Kjellén also knows about “Theobald Tor”, but he is not sure that he has heard any of the other songs that Johanna Helldén is criticising.

“In matters like these, if somebody feels offended or uncomfortable, it is not appropriate. I will ask all the sections to revise their song books and I think that we in the Engineering Student Union should revise our own too”.

How come they haven’t been removed earlier?

“I’m wondering that too. It makes me a little bit sad since the F-section is one of the most active student unions when it comes to matters of equality and have one of the most detailed plans for equal treatment within the union”.

Already in 2003, Lundagård wrote about the songs from the song books of the different sections which could be regarded as sexist and homophobic. The Engineering Student Union then promised to revise their books of songs and remove those kinds of songs.

“That was probably done, because the songs that were discussed at that time are no longer in the books”, says Rasmus Kjellén.

How come the currently criticised songs are in the song books?

“They might have snuck in afterwards. The song books are not proofread that well all the time, sometimes it is only one person who does it. We will revise our routines for how to update the song books”.

What could be done differently?

“It could be looked at by the section’s representative for equal treatment or something similar. They have a better insight into what could be regarded as offensive than the person who writes the song books might have”.
