Elisabeth Gehrke, Lundagård columnist. You are nominated to lead the European Students’ Union, the organisation with a responsibility of 15 million students from 39 different countries.

What does the job of being vice president for the European Students’ Union, ESU, involve?

“We represent the students’ interest on a European level. The major issue big question right now is how to finance education. There is a large debate going on about how to finance education in Europe where we are fighting for tax funding.”

How does the competition look?

“As far as I know I’m the only nominee and, provided that the national student unions want me, the outlook is pretty well.”

Does it feel like a fun job or is it mostly something fancy to put on your CV?

“Haha, I don’t know if it’s good for your CV to have been a part of student life for as long as I have been…but no, it actually feels incredibly fun and challenging.”

How will you celebrate if you were elected?

“When I was elected vice president for the Swedish National Union of Students (SFS) I promised to jump into the Lundagård park fountain, so this time it has to be something different… we have the meeting in Hungary, so I guess I will have to visit an outdoor spa.”

ESU is based in Brussels. What are your best recommendations for Brussels?

“What you do in Brussels…you drink beer and eat chocolate. And the waffles! The waffles are tasty!”
