Officially it’s a place to study, but for many the University Library rather seems also a place to flirt, eat, stare or sleep. Since a week, strange library-behavior can be ‘spotted’ on a special Facebook page.

‘To the girl in the white-grey pull who just spilled some soft drink over herself at the computers: can I lick it up?’ This is just one of several hilarious posts in the Facebook group ‘Spotted: Lunds University Library’.

Anonymously, students can send their frustrations or love for other students to the organizer of the group, who will put these on Facebook for everyone to read. The group exists only one week, but already has been ‘liked’ around 300 times.

The founder of the group, who wants to remain anonymous as well, tells about the concept:

“Many students in the library are bored. They tend to be tired and see funny things happen or do funny things themselves. In this group those little things can be shared to brighten up a day.”

Lund is not the first town to have a ‘Spotted’. In the Netherlands, for example, most university libraries have similar pages since a few weeks and even some high schools have joined the phenomenon.

The organizer tells: “I saw that they started with this in England. I thought that it was fun and that we should have something similar in Sweden. As far as I know, we were the first in Sweden, though. But the few people who know who I am have in the mean time founded similar pages for the libraries in Uppsala, Linköping and Kalmar.”

Not all posts will automatically be placed in the group, as the organizer sticks to certain rules.

“I never mention any names and it should not become too descriptive or really offensive. But I don’t see a problem with our newest post.”

That reads as follows: ‘To the guy who since an hour is staring at me, wondering who I am: last term you slept with a friend of mine and you met me in the kitchen before you left. So stop thinking of why I appear familiar and start studying!’

When asking the librarians at the University library itself, the word of the group haven’t seen to have spread to the staff. But on some of the social media accounts of the libraries around Lund – the question is on display:

“Is Spotted funny or not?”
