21. Ragnarök. Armageddon. We have many names for the things we love, including the phenomenon that could take place today. Maria Rosén philosophizes around the to be or not to be of the world, 21 December 2012.

Today it’s the day before the day before the day of Christmas Eve, and the end of a serious countdown is closing in. Today it’s also the day when an even more serious countdown reaches its end.

Today the days of the Maya calendar officially run out, ten days before my own calendar from Burde. I’m one of those people who thinks a new year is something really nice. A new calendar gives you the chance to fulfil never before fulfilled promises, a fresh start and the chance to turn the page. And everybody knows that, to turn the page is amazingly amusing The only time I have felt a slight feeling of doomsday getting close before a new year was before New Year’s Eve, 1999.

A new millennium was just around the corner for those who wanted a peek. Yet, there were a few who said that they’d already peeked, and who used surprisingly dark tones when they described what they had seen.

It was a given that our data systems would crash on the stroke of the bell at 00.00. Disastrous was an underestimation of the consequences, and clever were those who barricaded with lots of tinned goods in a bunker that could stand falling airplanes. New Year’s Day 2000 would be D-day.

Today it’s D-day again. But even though it might seem tempting to call CSN and report a study break, and contact Svensk Adressändring and change your address, it might be that keeping cool is the best solution this time too.

Today we are entering a new era according to the ancient beliefs of the Maya, for those who dare to peek. Think like a flight attendant if that feels better and keep a small cabin bag packed and ready. Because you never know when it will be time to move to another planet.
