All the shudders listening to ’Silent Night’ is not from pleasure. Lundagård asks Tony Ernst, the Malmö-based music journalist and Black Metal blogger, why he thinks Christmas music is disgusting.

How do you like traditional Christmas music?

“Disgusting. The Christmas music is either founded in Christian tradition, that is, reprehensible or founded in a commercial desire to buy things making it even more reprehensible. As I see it the two messages of the Christmas music are either to have us buy more shit or make us join a homophobic, sexist and patriarchal structured religion. Absolutely no thanks.”

Can you find good Christmas music?

“I usually say there is only one real good Christmas tune, The Band’s ”Christmas Must Be Tonight”.”

So, what do you listen to around Christmas?

“The same tunes I listen to the rest of the year. Preferably Rap, Black Metal, Ambient and Bob Dylan.”

Why is it that rather ungodly people suddenly feel a need for Christian songs at this time of the year?

“Tradition. ”It was very cosy when my whole family listened to Christmas music when I was little”. I don’t think you hardly make the reflection that most of these Christmas tunes have a Christian foundation. When it’s time for wrapping the Christmas presents it will be a soundtrack, nothing else.”
