Does the bleak and dreary November month tend to get you down? Paula Dubbink gives five tips for things to do during the coming week, so as to stay in good mood.

The month November – sigh. I don’t know about you, but personally I’m not exactly fond of it. The weather is either wet or cold (or both) and especially here in Sweden it turns dark very early.

And whereas in December, we have Christmas trees, lights, candles, cookies and whatevers to cheer us up, in November we have to remain happy by ourselves – not always easy.

Do you feel that November-dip or even a wintery autumn-depression coming up? I have some suggestions for activities during the coming week – make sure to stay active and you won’t have time to get down.

Thinking about travelling to destinations with a better temperature? Wermland’s Environmental organisation Green Way organizes a pub evening with the theme ´tourism´. You´ll be informed on how all our travelling influences the environment (oi…), but you’ll also be inspired on the ways in which you could actually be a environmentally-friendly tourist. As always, Green Way provides ecological snacks and drinks, so that should make for an enjoyable night.

Details: Wednesday November 28th, 19.00-01.00, Wermland’s Nation, Stora Tvärgatan 13.

Coming Saturday, December 1st brings World Aids Day. The Social Science Union has extended this to an AIDS/HIV week, to raise awareness for this worldwide problem. There will be a mix of fun and more serious activities, amongst others a debate and documentary night on Tuesday, a flash mob at Stortorget on Wednesday, more movies on Thursday and a theater play on Saturday. For the complete program and the locations, see the link.

In for some culture and for leaving Lund? Until March, Malmö hosts an exhibition about Tutankhamun.  The exhibition, which is very famous and travels to various cities in Europe, displays more than 1,000 replicas of objects found in Tutankhamun’s tomb, which was discover about a century ago. (The real objects are too frail to be exposed, but replicas have been made by renowned Egyptologists.) The masterpiece is obviously Tutankhamun’s golden mask.

Details: the exhibition is opened every day, at least from 10-17. Tickets for students are 135 SEK on weekdays and 165 SEK in the weekend. To arrive at the exhibition, you have to take the train to Malmö and get out at station Hyllie, which you can do three times in an hour. From there, it’s only a 250 m. walk.

Despite these fun activities, you still cannot wait for Christmas to come? Well, good news: the first weekend of Advent (December 1-2) brings the start of the Christmas season. So, you can finally listen to your favorite carols and eat pepparkakor without feeling guilty for being too early…

A very nice and fast way to get a good glimpse of Christmas in Sweden is the Julstök in Kulturen. This Open Air museum, located in the city center, is always worth a visit, but this Christmas market makes it extra special. There will be live music, a market to buy your Christmas present (you better start early) and you might even meet Santa… Add the smell of grilled sausages and roasted almonds and the Christmas atmosphere will definitely be present!

Details: Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd of December, 11.00-17.00. Costs: 45 SEK for students. Tickets can be reserved (see the link, unfortunately in Swedish), but also just bought at the door.

Another option to get the Christmas feeling going is to go to a nice concert! Bleckhornen, one of Lund’s student orchestras, organizes its annual Christmas concert on Saturday December 1st. Bleckhornen is a brass band and, in their own words, their concert will give ‘schlager, glitter and glamour’. Apart from that, there will be ‘fjång’. No clue what that is? One more reason to attend…

Details: There will be two concerts on Saturday December 1st. The first one starts at 15.00 and costs 60 SEK for students, the second at 18.00 and costs 110 SEK. Location: Stora Salen, AF-Building. The first ticket sales will be on November 27th at Stortorget at 12.00, where one can also get a glimpse of what the concert will sound like…

Have a nice week and fight that November-dip!
