Tired of the busy town of Lund? The city council now seeks to reduce noise pollution as a part of a national initiative. This and more in this weeks news.

Seeking a quieter Lund

As part of a national initiative, Lund’s council have now set their latest noise pollution program in motion. These actions include reducing speed limits on the streets in conjunction with the mapping of the noise pollution in Lund. The program will focus on the most ‘at risk’ areas such as schools and parks. Noise pollution effects the way we live our lives, as long exposure can lead to irregular sleep patterns and stress. This program will run until 2018.

Cutbacks loom over Max IV construction

Construction of the Max IV lab just north of Lund is now facing possible financial difficulties as regional backers Region Skåne threaten to pull out and with them 168 million sek, unless new management structure  is made available with the month, be it a Swedish company or European consortium. “This proposition has been placed to Lund’s University over the last few years but with out any responses” says Harald Lindström at Region Skåne. It has become a question of representation as Region Skåne feels that they have been sidelined whilst still being expected to support the project. But the Swedish research council, the main funder of the project, has given guarantees for increased financial support, lightening the uncertainties over the project.

“Everyone should live in a corridor once”

This is what AF Bostäder’s newly appointed CEO Henrik Krantz claims; “its a fantastic form of accommodation” This comes on the back of recent news that AF Bostäder will be raising student accommodation rents by 2.5 percent next year and shifting their focus to more affordable compact living. Lantz justifies the increase in citing that “most students will appreciate the maintenance work and the possibility of well kept apartments.”

Transport standstills in Öresund region

On the morning of the 15th scenes of chaos ensued as all public train connections linking Sweden and Denmark ground to a halt, the reason being a technical glitch in the communication systems between the trains on the Hyllie – Kastrup stretch. The result being that thousands of commuters who make the daily journey across the Öresund strait were left standing on the platforms. It wasn’t until two hours later that replacement bus services were up and running.

Half of the emergency doctors threatens to leave

As a part of  a protest against low staffing, the employed doctors at the emergency department at Lund’s university hospital threatens to leave their posts. The work environment inspector has left reported this to the national work environment agency.
