62,000 job applications and counting
One mans journey through the job market has taught him alot about life. Lund based citizen Carl Emilsson, 28, turned some heads in February when he applied for 62,000 jobs, the entire register at the national job centre. He did this both as a serious search but also a protest against the constant requirements which job seekers face when approaching an employer.
Carl Emilsson had apparently been denied his jobseekers allowance due to not activity applying for enough jobs, so he took matters into his own hands. His search led to many questions but ultimately no job. He now plans to continue his studies, taking this as a life experience.
Improving train connections
The government has released plans to increase the capacity of the commuter route between Malmö and Lund to four tracks. “These efforts are the most needed in Skåne and therefore has implications for the whole southern Swedish network” says Mats Persson, regional head of public transport.
The proposed improvements at a national level will be undertaken between 2014-2025 for the cost of 86 billion sek.
Saved jobs at Sony
More jobs than recently predicted will be saved from the lay offs at Sony Mobile here in Lund, a large percentage of the 650 employees who were laid of in August will be able to continue working within Sony. New jobs within the concern will be created as the company branches out in Sweden. The company has created a ‘careers center’ which will offer further training and employment opportunities throughout the sector. However this has been meet with some ambiguity from union members who feel that employees will become contractually bound to the company.
Orchard art
Lund’s Cathedral has this week been the scene for a more unusual art form, a canvas of apples measuring nine square meters. Created by local artist Emma Karp Lundström, the canvas takes the traditional ideas of the coming of autumn and the harvest and expresses it though a more visual form. As she states “Nature is a common theme throughout my work, this allows me to carry that concept further.” The installation will be on display until this Sunday.
