The university likes to brag about the great Internet connection on campus, but at the Centre for Languages and Literature there are lots of problems when it comes to establishing a connection to the wireless network. Why?

Lund University claims to offer very good possibilities for wireless Internet connections across the whole university area. Does the university really keep its promises? At the Centre for Languages and Literature, Sol, opinions differ.

Lundagård’s correspondent fails in connecting their computer to the wireless network, both in the silent reading-room on the third floor and in the smaller room H135b. In addition, it seems unreasonably difficult to get 3G coverage on mobile phones in the Sol reception, something that has caused many chilly moments outside the Sol building for the average student.

Lundagård calls up Jan Engvald at LDC, Lunds datacentral, responsible for the network at Sol, to find out what the problem is. At the start of the conversation the telephone crackles and Jan Engvald asks if we possibly are calling from Sol, since the mobile coverage tends to be bad there. This wasn’t the case, but it shows that LDC are aware that there are problems in the building.

When asked why the wireless network is so defective, Engvald replies that it’s because the network isn’t fully installed yet.

“At the moment the coverage at the Centre for Languages and Literature is sporadic, there are only a few access points right now, but our goal is to have coverage in the entire building.”

Sol has existed since 2004, why is it taking so long?

“There’s been a lot of work to do in other areas, so we haven’t been able to prioritize Sol.”

This creates speculations about how long the students at Sol will have to wait until they have access to the connection possibilities they expect.

“I’d guess that it will be about another four months”, says Jan Engvald.
