Doors and stalls opened all over Lund on Saturday as the annual Kulturnatten event offered residents the chance to enjoy food, dancing and lasers. Lundagård went along to try out just a few of the day’s highlights.
Sports Day
Having celebrated their 100th anniversary this year, the Lugi sports societies were out in force beside the to show off their skills and gather new recruits:
“We want to show Lund that there are rugby teams here. It would be nice to make it more popular amongst girls especially – it isn’t exactly a very Swedish sport,” remarks Rebecka McCarthy, current player and a PHD student at the university.
As part of the promotion, the various teams had the opportunity to give a practical demonstration of what their sports entailed. Niels Andersson Svärd is part of the fencing team and it fell to him to show what the sport is all about:
“I’m not really nervous about the demonstration. I have been doing it for 3 years now so I know it pretty well. I just wanted to get involved in something active, drag myself away from the video games!”
Feeling hungry?
For those less inclined to exercise there was ample opportunity to visit one of the many food and drink stalls that sought to showcase culinary delights from as far afield as Argentina and Ghana:
“I was in school to print some things and just decided to come down and try to eat something good. I grew up here so I know all about the good food on offer,” commented visitor Emma Willman.
International student favorite Lundaböcker also opened its doors for the evening:
“This is the first time I have opened on Kulturnatten. I am doing it more for people to get to know the place. I had been planning to have something with live music but never had the time to arrange it all properly. Maybe next year!” said owner Sergio Silva.
Something for the Evening
Regular activities were modified for the evening activities as the booming voice of ghost walk specialist Jaques Schultze could be heard telling tales of haunted organs in the cathedral:
“I’m doing a tour called ghosts and strange stories. It’s a slightly shortened version of a longer tour I run in the summer. So I have included only the really ghastly stuff!”
With so much going on it would have been easy to let the day pass by in a wave of activity but Cajsa Naess chose to take a more relaxed approach:
“We’re going to get some food then meet some friends, have some drinks, watch the live music and then go to the laser show. Just relax and enjoy the day really, it only comes round once a year after all!”
