In a small room at the top of the AF-building, two Radio AF personnel are hard at work producing a one-hour talk show by themselves. They may be foreigners to Sweden, but not to radio.

This early in the semester, the International Radio program rests mainly on the shoulders of Sharon Browker and Edward Percival.

“It’s really nice when we have students that carry over from term to term,” said program leader and co-host Sharon Bowker, who managed audio clips, played songs, controlled microphones and contributed discussion throughout the hour.

“We like to share interesting things”

The team hopes for more participants as the semester goes on. Last Friday afternoon, their second broadcast of the semester, the co-hosts discussed Swedish weather, Google Translate, the Hälsningsgille and Melodifestivalen.

“We like to be able to share interesting things that are going on around campus during the week,” Bowker said.

Message from Boston

International Radio is the only show Radio AF broadcasts entirely in English, and is geared toward Lund’s international community.

During their Friday show, the team received a message all the way from Boston, Massachusetts, in the U.S.

Bowker said they would like to develop regular features for the show, such as a Swedish word of the day or a news component.

“If we could find somebody that’s really keen on music, that would be great,” co-host Edward Percival said.

Looking for guests

International Radio is looking for students, international or native, to co-host the show and run the audio board.

“Anyone who is comfortable talking in English is welcome,” Bowker said.

“We’re definitely looking for guests,” Percival added.

Sharon worked in radio in her hometown of Lafayette, Indiana, in the U.S.

Edward, who hails from Perth, Australia, doesn’t plan to work in radio but co-hosts the program because he enjoys it.

“It’s just one of the things I enjoyed most on my first exchange in Uppsala,” he said.
